Neon Tiger Cafe Review

I’ve been slacking with scheduling cafes to visit! I really don’t know why. Anyway, Neon Tiger was the chosen cafe of the week. I saw that it was located in Malvern, and was happy that it would be close to me. So you can imagine my surprise when I mapped out the journey and realised it would take over 30 minutes to get to. The Melbourne suburbs ‘funniness‘ also struck again as I actually travelled to Toorak, then caught a tram to the cafe.

Once I got to the cafe’s premises, I got these chic vibes. It was however difficult for me to find a seat with good lighting. It was a warm day, and it was either I sat in the sun or in the shade. I’m not trying to get a tan, so, shade it was. But trust me, I took longer than normal to settle down. After deciding on a table, the waiter gave me the main menu and a small goods menu, which I was impressed by. Usually, cafes don’t have a menu for the muffins and cakes they also sell so you’re not really encouraged to buy them.

Before I talk about what I ordered, can we talk about the cafe’s name?? I love it. Their pink logo is probably another reason why I like the name.

Anyway, I ordered the Baklava French toast as it was the reason why I had them on my list. I also got the chocolate milkshake. I know, sugar overload, but it was a hot day :D, I am allowed. I also don’t know how smart it was to order these items together as they appeared to be both substantial.

The milkshake came first and for its price (AU$5.50), I wasn’t expecting it to be as big as it was. It wasn’t too thick though and gave me Milo vibes; no complaints tbh. Next was the toast, which was made with challah bread and came with an orange-flavoured cream, syrup and sweetened nuts. The cream was very different to anything I’ve tasted in a while, and it was very nice. It had this grainy texture in my mouth though, which I didn’t like. However, when combined with the French toast, you didn’t get that texture. It was the star of the dish, making a very good accompaniment to the toast.

The French toast was also good, but I thought that the amount of eggs used could have been reduced. I could smell the eggs before I had started eating. I didn’t like the syrup on its own, but it was okay with the French toast. I also thought it was unnecessary to sweeten the nuts, they could have just been served in their roasted form.

Note of caution, the cream has an intense orange flavour so if oranges aren’t your thing, you might want to skip it. And don’t order the French toast with a milkshake. I had to water my shake down and spent quite some time drinking and drinking. It was a very sweet brunch.

Will I return to Neon Tiger? Probably not, but you should definitely visit to enjoy the chic vibes and French toast.

Neon Tiger is located at 1252 Malvern Rd, Malvern VIC 3144.

  1. Re your very last sentence, you took the words right out of my head!
I hope the savouries will be as pretty. But then, when I think about some food art I’ve seen, I think we will be visually satisfied.

What did you think?
